The human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone level in the blood is measured by the beta human chorionic gonadotropin (-hCG) total test, ideally 10 days after conception. This hormone rises in the blood throughout the first 8 to 10 weeks of pregnancy, after which it begins to decline. Pregnancy can be confirmed with this test frequently. But it can also aid in the detection of ectopic pregnancy, post-miscarriage surveillance, and suspected malignancy diagnoses. HCG levels are not a very reliable indicator of pregnancy viability after 6-7 weeks of pregnancy. An ultrasound is instead used to verify the existence of a foetal heartbeat. When there is a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, the hCG level is low; when there are multiple pregnancies, the hCG level is high.
