The component of red blood cells called haemoglobin is what transports oxygen to the bodys cells. Hemoglobin has been glycosylated when glucose, a form of sugar, in the blood naturally binds to haemoglobin molecules (also referred to as haemoglobin A1c, or HbA1c). The amount of glycosylated haemoglobin in the blood can be determined using a blood test. The glycosylated haemoglobin test reveals the average blood sugar level for the two to three months preceding the test. This can be used to assess how effectively a persons diabetes is managed over time.
