ADH, also known as arginine vasopressin (AVP), is a hormone that aids in keeping the bodys water balance by regulating how much water the kidneys retain while removing waste from the blood. The level of ADH in the blood is determined by this test. The posterior pituitary gland near the base of the brain houses ADH, which is produced by the hypothalamus in the brain. The pituitary generally releases ADH when sensors pick up a rise in blood osmolality (the quantity of dissolved particles in the blood) or a fall in blood volume.
