Normal breast cells produce a protein called cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3). A lot of women with malignant breast tumours have elevated levels of CA 15-3 in their bodies. Since CA 15-3 can be detected in the blood, it serves as a tumour marker for tracking the development of cancer. Fewer than 50% of women with early-stage localised breast cancer or those with tiny tumours have increased CA 15-3. However, it is elevated in about 80% of those with breast cancer that has spread (metastatic).
