The HPLC Blood Test, or Hemoglobin Variant Analysis Test, is a laboratory test used to identify and measure abnormal hemoglobin variants in the blood. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Normal hemoglobin comprises four protein subunits, each containing a heme molecule that binds to oxygen. Abnormal hemoglobin variants can arise due to genetic mutations that alter the structure or function of hemoglobin. Some variants can cause diseases, such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, and other hemoglobinopathies. The HPLC Blood Test uses high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to separate and identify different types of hemoglobin based on their size and electrical charge.
